If your shipment of tungsten carbide or high speed steel is less than 450 lbs we recommend you ship by US Priority Mail, in 50-60 lb increments, using the United States Post Office’s medium, 11 x 8.5 x 5.5, Flat Rate box.
The box can be picked up free of charge from your local post office: US Post Office Priority Mail Boxes. You need to use the medium box to get the $17.10 flat rate.
Although we do not reimburse you for it, we strongly recommend that you purchase the USPS insurance. The premium is only 1% of the value,
Any loss during shipment is your responsibility.
Scrap carbide and/or HSS for recycling needs to be separated from each other and be clean and free of foreign material and excessive oil/coolant.
Please refer to our metal spark test and HSS Specifications pages for more information on HSS.
Place the scrap carbide or HSS in tripled, heavy-duty, freezer ziplock bags, wrapped in packing tape (yes, we absolutely mean 3 bags thick).
Think of these packets as bowling balls on steroids.
Stuff tightly crumpled newspaper under, between, around and on top of your ziplocked packets so they are absolutely as immobile as possible during shipment. Newspaper is cheap, scrap carbide is not.
We use DOUBLED, industrial strength, 8-mil bags to ship all over the country. Sissy sandwich bags and garbage bags do not work, No wooden boxes please, they break and do not give.
Tape the TopWe use crumpled, and very tightly stuffed newspaper below and around and on top of the “inside” container. This provides a firm crash cushion if the package is dropped.
Because it is padded to the max, the box has to be reinforced with packing tape along all the open edges and corners, which are shown in yellow below.
After reinforcing the corners and edges, the box should be taped 360º around all 3 dimensions (red gray & green)
(We just used duck tape
because it takes a great picture :)
